MLGC Scholarship
Oversees the Garrett College scholarship administered by the Garrett College Foundation, and annual awards for adult continuing education.
Scholarship Recipient- Aydan Fitzgerald
Through the Garrett College Foundation, the Mountain Laurel Garden Club awards an annual $1000 scholarship to a sophomore majoring in a field of study related to agriculture, forestry, environment, horticulture, or natural resources and wildlife technology. Aydan Fitzgerald, the 2024-25 recipient, is currently majoring in natural resources and wildlife technology at Garrett College. In an engaging talk to club members at the April 2025 meeting, he described how the MLGC scholarship helped him in part by supporting his “Batman utility belt” for field work in his major: all-weather notebooks, pens, and field guides; magnifying hand lenses; hats; and work gloves. Fitzgerald plans to continue his education in the wildlife and fisheries major at Frostburg State University in fall 2025.

The MLGC scholarship has been established to be awarded to a qualified Garrett College student, entering the sophomore year, who is majoring in a field of study related to Agriculture, Forestry, Environment, Horticulture, Natural Resources or Wildlife Technology.
The MLGC Scholarship Board was formally organized in 2008. Initially students were requested to submit an application directly to the MLGC Scholarship Board. The first MLGC scholarship was awarded the amount of $500 for the academic year 2009-10.
The MLGC Executive Board approved increasing the scholarship amount to $1000 in 2012. A Memorandum of Understanding between Garrett College, the Garrett College Foundation, and the MLGC was signed in July 2013. The Garden Club specified the qualifications to be met. The agreement put the application process and the selection of recipients under the direction of the financial aid office. Since then, a
$1000 scholarship has been awarded each year.
