DEDICATION FOR BLUE STAR MEMORIALS
We are here to pay tribute to our Armed Forces. While we go about our daily lives or while we sleep, the men and women in our Armed Forces fly our skies, sail our seas and guard our shores, ensuring our safety. They stand ready at a moment's notice to defend our Country. We must not forget them, and, WE DO NOT! WE REMEMBER. With every step of the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. WE REMEMBER. With every drumbeat on the Fourth of July. When we Pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, WE REMEMBER. At the sound of Reveille, WE REMEMBER. As the last lingering note of Taps resounds in the distance, WE REMEMBER. In REMEMBERING

today, we dedicate this Blue Star Marker to the honor and glory of all those men and women who have served, are now serving, and will serve in the Armed Forces of this great Nation. It is with pride that the National Garden Clubs, Inc. joins with the Mountain Laurel Garden Club to perpetuate our Blue Star Memorial Marker Program

with this Marker that stands as a symbol for
ALL TO SEE
LEST WE FORGET
THOSE WHO HELP TO KEEP US FREE

On September 9, 2021, a sunny bluebird skies morning, the blue star memorial marker was dedicated at the Youghiogheny Overlook Welcome Center on I-68 eastbound near Friendsville.  This is the only Blue Star Memorial marker on I-68. The Blue Star program is an initiative of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC), to honor all men and women who serve in the United States armed services.   Linda Harris, MLGC Blue Star Marker chair, spearheaded the project with the assistance of Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland (FGCMD) and Maryland Department Of Transportation.

The moving ceremony was performed by the American Legion Post 208 of Accident and featured the presentation of colors, an invocation by Walter Nauman (Chaplain, Post 208), the Pledge Of Allegiance, and The Star-Spangled Banner played By Harry Miller (Bugler, post 208).

A Blue Star Memorial Marker has been placed at the Youghiogheny Overlook Welcome Center on I-68 in Garrett County. This is the first memorial to be placed on I-68in Maryland.  The welcome center is located on the western end of I-68 just into Maryland from West Virginia.  Installed the summer of 2020.
